Tears and tributes to popular father and son from Portsmouth who died hours apart
MOVING Robbies white coffin and his father Dominics brown coffin is carried into the cathedral
TEARS were shed as hundreds of mourners said their final goodbyes to a father and son who tragically died 36 hours apart.
Family and friends filled St John’s Cathedral, in Landport, for the joint funeral of Dominic Pool, 63, and his son Robbie, 42.
Both had lost their battle with terminal illnesses at Queen Alexandra Hospital within hours of each other, as reported in The News.
Mourners sang All Things Bright and Beautiful as Dominic and Robbie’s coffins were carried in.
Father Phillip Harris, who led the tributes, said Dominic, of Kensington Road, Copnor, and Robbie, of Highland Road, Eastney, were much loved by everyone they met.
He continued: ‘Dominic loved his life at home more than anything and enjoyed doing odd jobs around the house.
‘He loved his wife Diane very much.’
Poems I Remember and Death is Nothing At All were also read out in tribute.
Mourners took communion and both coffins were covered in Holy water and sprayed with incense to represent the pair’s Catholic faith.
A heartfelt rendition of Thine Be The Glory was sang as their coffins were carried out and taken to Kingston Cemetery for burial.
Robbie died from liver failure and his dad Dominic, a life-long Pompey fan, died from pneumonia 36 hours later on January 20 in a separate ward.
Dominic’s niece Christine Davis, 58, of Lower Drayton Lane, Drayton, said she would always remember her uncle for his passion for food.
‘He was fantastic cook, and every Tuesday he would cook a giant pasta dish for the whole family,’ she said.
‘He was so full of life.
‘He loved to joke and wind you up.
‘It’s still a shock. Everyone knew they were ill but no one thought they would pass away so close together. The service was a fine send off for them.’
Robbie’s cousin Janine Beaven, 47, of Cosham, said: ‘We were really close.
‘When we were young we used to play a lot together and have dinner around each other’s houses.
‘We grew up together really.
‘I still can’t believe he’s gone.’
