Tesco jobs boost for Gosport

CONSTRUCTION work has finished on the new Tesco store in Rowner – and now the supermarket giant is hunting for staff.

The superstore in Gosport is still just an empty shell, but already jobs are being advertised at the new location.

The firm is working with Job Centre Plus to provide guaranteed interviews for a number of long term unemployed people.

Councillor Graham Burgess is the deputy leader of Gosport Borough Council.

He said: ‘It’s wonderful news.

‘Having a new superstore on the doorstep will make life easier for the residents of Rowner.

‘It’s a great boost for the area.

‘Tesco is very impressed by the calibre of candidates applying from the local area.’

The new Tesco store is planned to open in the early summer.

It is part of the multi-million pound Rowner Renewal Project.

The project as a whole will bring almost 500 new homes with parks and play areas for children.

Alongside the new homes and Tesco supermarket, three smaller retail units are also being built and will open in the early summer.

People will be invited to celebrate the store openings at a ceremony.

One of them is Jaffers Pharmacy, which has been based in Rowner for more than 25 years.

Kevin Bourner, from the Homes and Communities Agency, said: ‘We’ve invested significantly in new homes in Rowner and it’s pleasing businesses are bringing investment and jobs into the area too.

‘I’m looking forward to people benefitting from the jobs that are to be created here.’

The Rowner Renewal Partnership launched the renewal project in 2007 to make the area safer and more attractive.

It also aims to introduce better transport and access to jobs.

The Renewal Partnership consists of five member organisations including First Wessex, Gosport Borough Council, Hampshire County Council, the Homes and Communities Agency and Taylor Wimpey.

For details on how to apply for jobs at the new Tesco store, people should contact JobCentre Plus or register interest by email to gosport.tescorowner@dwp.gsi.gov.uk.

You should leave your name, a telephone number and say what sort of roles you are interested in.
