THE source of ‘white balls’ on beaches at Hayling and West Wittering remains a mystery.

Havant Borough Council is still waiting to hear back from the Environment Agency after samples of an unknown substance were found on the shoreline.

The golf-ball-sized balls – believed to be a natural oil-based substance – were washed up with the storm tide last Friday.

Beaches remained open, but dog-owners were warned to be vigilant about dogs eating the balls. A council spokeswoman said most of the balls had been washed back out with the tide.
