THE News has been crowned Daily Newspaper of the Year at an awards ceremony.
The newspaper was handed the title today at the EDF Energy awards for London and the south of England. Business reporter Claire French was named Daily Print Journalist of the Year and sports writer Jordan Cross was crowned Columnist of the Year.
The awards recognise the best of local and regional journalism and attracted hundreds of entries.
They were presented by paratriathlete Lauren Steadman, a former University of Portsmouth student.
Editor of The News Mark Waldron said: ‘Our primary motivation as journalists is to serve our readers - to inform and entertain, and make sure they know everything they need to know about their area. But having said that, it’s a pleasure to see the dedicated work of my staff recognised by the industry. It’s a thoroughly deserved award - everyone has worked so hard over the past year and I’m delighted.
‘Claire and Jordan are worthy winners, and indeed everyone who was short-listed deserved to be there.’
