THIS year marks the 39th edition of the Campaign For Real Ale (CAMRA) Good Beer Guide, which is released today.
The independent guide features the best 4,500 real ale pubs and breweries across the country, according to CAMRA’s 130,000 national members.
Over the past 12 months beer tasters have visited pubs in the region to see if their beers are worthy of them being placed in the guide.
VIBRANT music and great beer are the ingredients which led the Royal Marine Artillery Tavern to be included in this year’s Good Beer Guide.
Landlord Kevin Smith, who has been in charge of the pub in Cromwell Road, Eastney, for the past five years, said he was delighted at the accolade.
He believes the popular local has everything a good pub requires – a spacious area, a good atmosphere, live music, and great beer.
Kevin, who grew up in Southsea, said: ‘I used to like the pub years ago, so I thought to myself I would go out and get it.
‘I’m really pleased that we’re in the guide. We deserve it.’ The CAMRA guide describes the pub as ‘a back-street drinkers local. The beer range is from Fuller’s and the Gale’s beer list.’
Nick Courtney, 51, who organises live music at the pub each Thursday, said: ‘It’s an extremely well run pub, which is clean, friendly, and has a good selection of alcohol.’
