PLANS to build 241 homes on farmland next to the A3 have been met with opposition.

Residents spoke of their concerns about lack of infrastructure, extra traffic, loss of countryside and the impact on wildlife as they visited a public exhibition at Petersgate Infant School in Clanfield.

Barratt Homes and David Wilson Homes propose to build a new development at Down Farm, off Green Lane, just outside South Downs National Park and next to the new 275-home Windmill View development.

The proposals come as Taylor Wimpey wants to build 220 properties at White Dirt Farm, off Southdown Road.

Margaret Irons, of New Road, Clanfield, said: ‘We are not happy about these proposals. It’s going to add to what is already over-development in this area.

‘There’s nothing I have seen that makes us feel confident this is going to benefit Clanfield. They are spoiling Clanfield.’

Her husband Stephen Irons added: ‘There’s too many people in a small community.’

Byron Chalcraft, of Green Lane, said: ‘This area of Clanfield has taken more than its fair share of development compared to the rest of East Hampshire.’

John Vincent, of Oak Road, said the site was important for wildlife and surveys show it is home to dormice, bats and reptiles.

The proposals include 40 per cent affordable housing.

The new homes would be reached from both Chalton Lane and Green Lane.

The speed limit would be reduced along Chalton Lane to 30mph.

According to estimates, there would be 138 extra vehicle movements during the morning and 149 in the evening rush hour.

James Dunne, technical director for the developers’ Southampton division, said the proposals include allotments, a bowling green and sports facilities.

A new junction – a T-junction or mini-roundabout – could be built in Chalton Lane.

He said: ‘One of the key features for the scheme is to provide an open-space buffer to the perimeter of the development. It’s finding the right balance between meeting the need for new homes and balancing that with the needs of the community.’

After analysing yesterday’s feedback, a formal planning application could be ready in two months.
