A LATE-NIGHT blaze claimed the lives of 30 birds after an aviary caught fire.

Firefighters were called to Ludlow Road in Paulsgrove at around 10.30pm yesterday.

An aviary in the garden of a house there was destroyed by a fire, thought to have been caused by some uncontrolled burning in the garden earlier in the day.

Firefighters from Cosham and Southsea attended and left the scene at around 12.30am.
