THOUSANDS of people have already signed up to a fans’ campaign to save Pompey.

Around 3,538 fans have signed up to the Pompey’s 12th Man initiative – a scheme calling for supporter involvement to safeguard the club’s future.

The campaign has been backed by former stars Alan Knight and Ray Crawford.

Fans are calling to pack Fratton Park on Saturday for the clash with Hull City and show their support.

Members of the Pompey Supporters’ Trust say they are encouraged.

A spokesman said: ‘It has been a great start but only a start. We need to get many more thousands of fans signed up if at all possible this week. What is also encouraging is the number of fans’ organisations that are pledging support as well, despite the anxiety of what may happen.’

Ex-goalkeeper Mr Knight, who made nearly 700 appearances in goal for the club, added: ‘It’s important for the community that the club survives in some form. This show of strength and solidarity will go a long way.’

Mr Crawford, who was capped for England, said the 12th Man campaign was ‘tremendous’.

He said: ‘We are down in the dumps but we have been there before. Let’s get behind the team and be there on Saturday.’
