Weathermen today warned that thunderstorms could hit Portsmouth as temperatures rise.

The Met Office forecast for the south-east said: ‘Today will be very warm and humid with localised, very heavy, thundery downpours through the day. There should still be sunny spells, the best of these perhaps during the evening. Maximum Temperature 26 °C.

‘The last of any showers will clear Kent this evening, leaving a fine and dry night with long clear spells and light winds. Minimum Temperature 7 °C.

‘Saturday will start dry with sunny spells. Some cloud will develop through the day, though it should remain dry. Temperatures around normal but with a brisk breeze in places. Maximum Temperature 19 °C.’
