PORTSMOUTH MP Penny Mordaunt is throwing her support behind a campaign to check smoke alarms this weekend.

As the clocks go back, firefighters are encouraging people to spare a minute to check their smoke alarm.

Penny Mordaunt, who is the national fire minister, said: ‘At the weekend, when you turn back the clocks in your home, I urge everyone to Tick Tock Test their smoke alarms too.

‘It takes little extra time and could well be a life saver.’

Last year, more than half of the 213 fire deaths in the home were caused by smoke inhalation.

Station manager Glenn Bowyer said: ‘Smoke alarms are well-proven life savers, as we saw earlier this week in Gosport, when we rescued a mother and two children from a serious fire in their home.

‘But only working smoke alarms save lives.

‘You are at least four times more likely to die in a fire if you don’t have a working smoke alarm.’
