BATHING water off a Fareham beach has been rated as excellent under new classifications.

Hill Head was awarded the highest rating after the announcement of the first bathing water classifications under the 2006 Bathing Water Directive.

Executive member for public protection at Fareham Borough Council Cllr Trevor Cartwright said: ‘We are absolutely delighted that our beach at Hill Head has been given the highest award possible.

‘It is fantastic news for everyone that uses the beach. All we need now is a really good summer next year to get the maximum benefit from it.’

A symbol to reflect the site’s new status will be added to the existing signage before the beginning of next year’s bathing session.

The council was notified by the Environment Agency of the award on November 5 in a letter to its chief executive Peter Grimwood.

The classifications are based on monitoring data collected by the Environment Agency between 2012 and 2015.

The bathing waters at Hill Head were sampled as it is Fareham’s only designated bathing beach.
