Town centre Christmas lights knocked out by wind and rain

CHRISTMAS lights in Southsea were out for several days after a connection was affected by bad weather.

Mike Watmore, of The Retreat, which is close to the Palmerston Road shopping precinct, said he was sad to see the lights out since Friday.

The pensioner said: ‘The lights have been put up for about the last six years but this year they really went to town and they look great.

‘But they keep having technical failures. They were out since last Friday and I wonder how long they would have stayed out if I hadn’t reported them?

‘I think the council needs to be a bit more proactive.’

Portsmouth City Council’s town centre manager, Barry Walker, said: ‘There are permanent lights on the trees in Palmerston Road, as well as Christmas lights.

‘They were all checked and working on Thursday of last week. Very wet and windy weather sometimes causes a group of lights to trip out and go off, and it’s highly likely that this is what has happened recently.

‘We’re sorry for this and we’re grateful to residents and retailers who let us know of any faults.

‘Our contractor will check the lights again and fix any problems.’
