FEARS have been raised that students will be stranded at college when changes to bus routes in Portsmouth come into effect on Sunday.

Jade Weller, of Copnor Road, Copnor, is worried she will be stuck at South Downs College, in Purbrook, after her classes finish if she misses the last 7C bus service at 5.26pm.

But operator First Hampshire and Dorset Ltd said she can catch another service from nearby Crookhorn Lane – just a short walk away – well into the evening.

Jade, 17, said: ‘If I miss that bus then I would have to phone my uncle to pick me up, but he works until 6.30pm most days so if he was at work, I’d have to walk.

‘Even if I make it in time for that bus I might not get on it because it’ll be packed if it’s the last one from college.’

While the bus company said changes are being made in a bid to improve services, Jade’s nan Anne Barrow believes not enough thought has gone into the details of the changes.

Mrs Barrow, 70, of Devon Road, Copnor, said: ‘That road is badly lit and it’s surrounded by trees.

‘I don’t like the idea or her being stuck there.

‘And I really don’t like the thought of lots of young girls having to walk along that road in the dark to get to another bus stop. I don’t know how the bus company has come to this decision but it just seems wrong.’

A spokeswoman for First Hampshire and Dorset Ltd said: ‘While students may be concerned about the timing of the last buses to call directly at the college, we would point out that Service 7 will continue to serve roads close to the college well into the evening.

‘A timetable for those services specifically serving South Downs College has been produced and can be found be downloaded from the First Hampshire website.’
