MOTORISTS endured more delays getting off of Hayling Island because of roadworks.
There were long queues on Havant Road, stretching back to Mill Rythe, as work to extend the Hayling Billy leisure trail began, near The Ship Inn, yesterday.
The queues started at around 10am when temporary traffic lights were put in place.
Roadworks in the area have caused congestion for weeks and there have been calls for to employ a more ‘joined up’ approach.
Steve Mountain, special projects engineer at Havant Borough Council, which is carrying out the work, said: ‘We carried out work to install bus access kerbs yesterday morning. Temporary traffic lights controlling traffic on and off the island were in place for today only from 9.45am until 12.50pm when the work was completed, over three hours earlier than planned. We apologise for any inconvenience this may have caused drivers.’
Thirty minutes of work will be carried out today which will affect traffic but will be controlled by stop/ go signs.
The council said after today no more of the ongoing Hayling Billy trail improvements will involve having to control traffic.
