Drink-driving warning comes from children

CHILDREN are pleading with adults not to drink and drive.

The campaign has been organised by officers at Waterlooville police station and saw scores of schoolchildren designing posters.

Youngsters came up with catchy slogans to hammer the message home, including ‘Think before you drink’ and ‘Don’t drink and drive, stay alive’. One emotive poster featured a child looking out of the window and waiting for his dad to come home.

The Mayor and Mayoress of Havant borough, Gerald and Elaine Shimbart, judged who had produced the best poster.

The winners were given a tour of Waterlooville police station and their designs are now on display on buses in Portsmouth and Waterlooville.

Cllr Shimbart said the fact that the message was being delivered by children made it all the more powerful.

‘People can see it from the children’s point of view,’ he said.

‘People have got to realise it doesn’t only affect them. It’s wonderful that the children can educate adults.’

The joint winners were Kian Withers and James Cullen, both 10 years old. Evan Crowe, 11, took second place and Paige Reed, 11, was third in the competition.

As well as designing posters, children in Year 6 classes were given an hour’s lesson on the dangerous consequences of drink-driving in the hope they would go home and share the information with their parents.

PC Matthew James, from Waterlooville police station, said: ‘I have run this competition to complement the force’s “Don’t Get Smashed” campaign with a view to getting the message of the devastating consequences of drink-driving across through the eyes of children.

This has resulted in some very impactful posters.’

PC James thanked First Bus for sponsoring the competition, as well as Tesco in Havant for providing prizes.
