The minister in charge of local transport visited Gosport today, urging commuters to use alternatives to roads.
Norman Baker MP, minister for regional and local transport, was shown traffic blackspots at Newgate Lane, the A32, along with the Bus Rapid Transit scheme, the Gosport ferry and the Daedalus enterprise zone.
He said: ‘Clearly it’s important to get as many people off the roads as possible.
‘Some can cycle, some can get the bus rapid transit, some can get the boat.
‘I’m better informed and I’ve given them advice locally to how they can take things forward to try and get a transport solution for their area.’
Gosport MP Caroline Dinenage and the council leader, Councillor Mark Hook showed the minister the borough.
Ms Dinenage said the constituency already has the third highest bicyle use in the UK.
She said: ‘Transport issues are the major barrier to everything we’re trying to do in Gosport.
‘Gosport has one of the lowest ratios of people to jobs in the UK and 20,000 people every day out-commute to get to work along those single lane roads.
‘We’re doing everything we can to promote other forms of transport but still that road is a major, major issue.’
Mr Baker was lobbied by First Bus and Hampshire County Council for more cash toward the Bus Rapid Transit on his last visit to Gosport in January.
Hampshire County Council last year announced a £8.5million package to enhance Newgate Lane.
