WORK to improve traffic flow at a major bottleneck is starting on Monday and will last for a year.

The county council is spending £6.5m on Newgate Lane, Fareham, to help improve access to the Gosport peninsula including two lanes of traffic in both directions.

Initial preparation work will start on Monday to clear vegetation, with the main works starting after Easter.

Gosport MP Caroline Dinenage welcomed the announcement.

She said: ‘Road congestion is a hugely significant issue in our area which is why I’m thrilled that work on Newgate Lane will finally get under way next week.

‘Having campaigned tirelessly for change, I hope that this will mark the beginning of widespread improvements to the road network.

‘Newgate Lane will become of even greater strategic importance in the coming years as development at the Daedalus Enterprise Zone gains pace.

‘In the meantime, I’m delighted that long-awaited change is finally being delivered to those commuting in and out of Gosport, Stubbington, Hill Head and Lee-on-the-Solent.’

Executive member for transport at the county council, Cllr Sean Woodward said: ‘Obviously there will be some travel disruption but I ask people to bear with us while this major infrastructure project is completed.’

Cllr Woodward, who is also leader of Fareham council, added: ‘As someone who regularly travels on Newgate Lane and queues in the appalling congestion, the improvements in traffic flow will I hope be well worth it.’

The scheme is centred on the section of Newgate Lane from Palmerston Drive to Tanners Lane and includes a new footway on the west side of Newgate Lane from Tanners Lane south to meet the existing footway.

There will also be work to improve the entrance to HMS Collingwood and roundabouts at Speedfield Park and Longfield Avenue.
