AN impressive 6,500 people started an apprenticeship in Hampshire between August last year and January 2012, new figures have revealed.

The news comes as records also show that the county took on more apprentices than any other last year.

More than 11,000 people started an apprenticeship during the 2010-11 period in Hampshire – a 24 per cent increase on the previous year.

Portsmouth South MP Mike Hancock said: ‘The record rise in learners taking them up last year is great news for Portsmouth and the economy as a whole.’
