Charge points for Gunwharf Quays shoppers to wire up electric vehicles
ELECTRIC vehicle charging points will be available in Gunwharf Quays’ car park from tomorrow.
The Lord Mayor of Portsmouth Cheryl Buggy will officially open the Polar charging bays which allow EV owners to charge up their vehicles while visiting the centre.
The bays are on the upper level of the car park, in the blue section near to the exit, and can be used by Polar network members.
The south coast already has more than 80 charging bays within an hour’s drive of Portsmouth and in the next 12 months that figure will increase to more than 150.
David Martell, chief executive of Chargemaster Plc, said: ‘We are delighted Portsmouth is moving forward with Polar, allowing electric vehicle owners in this area the opportunity to take advantage of low carbon motoring, whilst enjoying Gunwharf Quays and neighbouring facilities.’

Wednesday, February 22, 2012 at 07:34 PMThanks for those constructive ideas Yocal - I especially like the induction idea. I do think though that the engineering and infrastructure challenges would be massive in a city like Portsmouth given that it's the second most densely populated city in the UK, not to mention the massive cost involved. Even a relatively simple electronic bus stop information system using well-used gps failed to deliver and was abandoned before it ever got to be up and running a few years ago. Still, let's see how things develop - be good to come back and comment again on this subject in 10 years time and see where things have got to in Portsmouth and what percentage of cars resident in the city are powered purely by electricity.

Wednesday, February 22, 2012 at 01:48 PMLazza there are many places that could be used to charge up vehicles, including at shops and at work, Also the issue you put forward is largely an engineering and infrastructure one. There is no reason why onstreet charging can not be done. It shouldn't be to hard to identify the vehicle and owner automatically so that the owner can be billed. There is also the idea of charging via induction. This could be done whilst the car is parked on the road and would require no wires. You just need to set up the infrastructure to do it. Wind turbines are not limited in the long term once a number of energy storage and smart grid systems are in place. Isentropic near Fareham is probably a key company developing the new technology that will be used.

Tuesday, February 21, 2012 at 05:52 PMElectric cars won't be a practical option for the majority of drivers living in Portsmouth given that they usually need to be charged up overnight and every night if they are to be used for the daily commuter run. Only people who have off-road parking will be able to safely connect their car to their house electric supply. Like wind farms, it's a green idea that definitely has benefits but only very limited ones. It's surprising that this obvious practical problem is hardly ever mentioned
