Hopes high over new £1.5million Chichester footbridge
HOPES are high a new £1.5m footbridge will be built this year to replace a notorious Chichester rail crossing – after more than a decade of campaigning.
A meeting in the city attended by representatives of Network Rail, the county, district and city councils, Fishbourne CoE Primary School and Fishbourne Parish Council was told rail chiefs had money in their budget for the project.
There it was revealed that the plan is to build the bridge during 2012.
The light-controlled crossing, for pedestrians, in Fishbourne Road East, has claimed three lives over the years, and there have been a number of unrecorded incidents and near misses.
It is believed to be the busiest of its kind in the country, used by thousands of people every week.
County councillor Louise Goldsmith, who represents the county’s Chichester west division, said: ‘There is now really a lot of goodwill to get something going as soon as possible. They are putting together final plans fairly shortly.’
