Harvey the horse ‘doing fine’ after surviving crash

IN ACTION Harvey

BLACK beauty Harvey had a lucky escape after the horse box he was being carried in tumbled down a motorway embankment.

The animal and its owners were on their way to Wiltshire to take part in a horse show last Friday.

But somehow the horse box became unattached from the American motorhome it was being pulled by and rolled off the M27 on the westbound carriageway, between junctions 8, Bursledon, and 9, Segensworth.

As reported in The News, luckily the horse did not suffer major injuries and two hours later was rescued by the fire service. The family who own Harvey said the incident could easily have had devastating consequences if it had come off on the right-hand side of the motorway.

Kevin Worcester, 49, of Aldwick, near Bognor Regis, said: ‘We were going to a show in Wiltshire and I have a camera in the rear so I can see the horse box.

‘As we were driving I looked at it and saw the box had become unattached.

‘I then looked in the left side mirror and could see it falling down the embankment.

‘I still don’t know how it became unattached, but I’m just really glad it went to the left and not right otherwise it would’ve caused fatalities.

‘Harvey was in the box and he was really good as he waited to be rescued.’

Harvey, pictured, belongs to Mr Worcester’s wife Claire, 37, who was in the motorhome along with their five-year-old twins. They saw the horse box flip over onto its side. The roof had come off, which enabled the horse to be rescued.

‘We gave him some painkillers and apart from that he was really good,’ added Kevin.

‘The fire service and the animal rescue team were absolutely fantastic – and the police. I take my hat off to them, they handled everything really well. Harvey is doing fine, he’s been resting. The vet came to see him over the weekend and he had to have three stitches and a couple of staples, but apart from that he’s fine.’

The M27 was closed in both directions while the horse was freed and put into the new horsebox.
