Horse has lucky escape after M27 accident

A HORSE had a miracle escape when the box it was travelling in rolled down a motorway embankment.

The animal was being carried inside a horsebox when the accident happened on the westbound M27, between Junctions 8, Bursledon, and 9, Segensworth, yesterday at around 4pm.

Its container detached from the vehicle it was being pulled by and rolled down the embankment, coming to a rest upside down.

The horse – which is named Harvey and was on its way to a show in Wiltshire – managed to stand up inside the wrecked horsebox but could not get out.

The fire service had to wait for a suitable lorry to arrive so the horse could be safely removed.

Animal rescue officer Jim Green said: ‘The delay in freeing the animal was purely down to waiting for the container to arrive.

‘We couldn’t risk releasing it until we had something to put it into.

‘When we did get it out the horse didn’t seem hurt at all. It had a very, very lucky escape.’

The M27 was closed in both directions while the horse was freed and put into the new horsebox.

Traffic travelling westbound from Junction 11 faced 50 minute delays while 15 minute delays were experienced eastbound from Junction 8.
