Our drivers in top 10 for safety
Drivers in Hampshire are among the safest in the country, according to a new report.
Despite the south-east being recognised as having the highest rate of road casualties per head of population, drivers in Hampshire are placed the seventh safest in the country by the Institute of Advanced Motorists.
The IAM report, published today, places drivers in West Sussex as 10th safest in the country.
In Hampshire there were 378 casualties per 100,000 population, with 877 people killed or severely injured in 2007 – the last full year of statistics available.
In West Sussex, there were 389 casualties per 100,000 population, with 476 people killed or seriously injured.
The south-east was named as having the highest road casualty rate in England, with 484 per 100,000 population.
IAM director of policy and research, Neil Greig, said: 'There are more motorists than ever in the south-east.
'The injury rate per head of population is the highest in England.'
