Two freed after car hits lamp post

TWO people were rescued from the wreckage of a car after it hit a lamp post in Waterlooville.
Firefighters and paramedics battled to help the injured driver and his passenger after the crash in Hulbert Road.
Their black Hyundai had hit the kerb on the central reservation before crashing into the post and landing on the other side of the road.
The crash, which left both the driver and passenger with serious injuries, happened at about 2.45pm yesterday.
One of the men was taken by air ambulance to Queen Alexandra Hospital in Cosham.
A second helicopter was called but was not needed to transport the other casualty.
He was taken by road to Southampton General Hospital.
His injuries were last night described as potentially life-threatening.
Both men, who were aged 25 and 30, were placed on spinal boards at the scene.
An eyewitness, who lives nearby and did not want to be named, said: ‘I was indoors when we heard a huge bang.
‘We went outside and then the car was off the road.
‘It looked like a very nasty accident.
‘The next thing we knew there was an air ambulance coming down the road and it landed in the middle.
‘Then a second one turned up.’
A large stretch of Hulbert Road was closed between the two roundabouts nearest to the town centre.
Once the two men were taken to hospital, accident investigators arrived to inspect the area.
Police kept the road shut until around 7.10pm.
Firefighters had to free one of the men from the car by cutting him out.
A total of 15 firefighters and a manager were called to the crash. Two units came from Waterlooville along with a special equipment unit and pump from Cosham.
A spokeswoman for Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service said: ‘We were called to a road traffic collision involving a car and a lamp post on the highway.
‘One person was extricated from the vehicle and a further casualty was transferred to hospital by ambulance.’

Sunday, February 19, 2012 at 08:40 AMActually I did not wish them dead, I just stated they were lucky to not have involved other people in their accident. It is always the innocent that suffer in these incidents. I do apologise for any misunderstanding of my message, and wish all well.

Sunday, February 19, 2012 at 01:17 AMTo those of you who have wished these two young men dead, WHO THE HELL DO YOU THINK YOU ARE?!!! The passanger who was air-lifted to hospital is my 20 year old cousin who is a very mature young man and reponsible driver. He did not crash the vehicle, and was not driving recklessly, however he is the one who has been lying in a coma for a week, bruised and broken in ways that you couldn't possibly comprehend. He was the innocent bystander, so why do you feel the need to slander his existance when NOONE else was hurt!!! That young man has a life and family and friends who love him very much and pray every second of every day that he will be given back to us, so I would suggest that the likes of David Hawkes think about what if it were you, or your friend or loved one lying in the crushed wreckage of a car, would you have other judgemental pigs wishing death? Show some compassion!!! And if you can't say anything nice, keep your mouth shut!!!

Friday, February 17, 2012 at 10:05 AMI have read all these messages and would just like to say that, I drove along that stretch of road three times on that day. I found the road surface in the morning to be poor but safe if you stayed within the limits. In the afternoon its was good within the limits. The road from the Shell petrol station towards Asda was very poor I nearly lost control of my car at 25mph very icy conditions lucky for me I was OK. As for comment about stopping distances modern cars stop at far shorter distance than stated however ABS systems are not good on ice (you never seem to stop). As for the police sign it is all about evidence! I am also glad that it was not a school day because a number of children that walk along that road on their way home from school.

Thursday, February 16, 2012 at 02:25 PM@BrigitteB the police posted on facebook this morning appealing for witnesses and I mentioned the nasty remarks on this site which they agreed to review. And yes they do monitor such things! Where do you think they get criminal Intelligence from?

Thursday, February 16, 2012 at 02:16 PMSnapdog! Do you honestly think the police are monitoring this chat for people wishing each other the distress of losing someone close to them? Does Scotland Yard know too?

Thursday, February 16, 2012 at 11:56 AMWitnesses need to contact the police, not chat about it here. Contact Sergeant Darren Orde on 101, quoting Operation Jarvis. Police have also been informed of the content of some of the comments on here, they are monitoring so beware of what you say!

Wednesday, February 15, 2012 at 06:12 PM@samanthajt: Thank you. I will continue to monitor this thread and make the family aware of any new developments. I feel that i must continue to urge eye witnesses to come forward and either post on this tread or speak directly to the police using the details which snapdog has thoughtfully provided in post No. 32. Any information can be used to help the police investigation and the doctors ascertain what happened so that they can treat the passenger to the best of their abilities during short and long term care. Thanks

Wednesday, February 15, 2012 at 03:20 PMFor the record, I am not agreeing with David... I just think it is totally unforgivable to wish anyone else harm!

Wednesday, February 15, 2012 at 03:08 PM@CJaYmo93 - Comment 20 I do agree that the passenger in the car pretty much has no control over the drivers foot on the gas pedal... and losing control of a car under any road conditions is possible. But, you saying that you hope that someone close to David Hawke's has a life threatening accident makes you just about as ignorant as they come! That's a horrible thing to say!

Tuesday, February 14, 2012 at 11:26 PM@samanthajt: thank you for your kindness. I am in touch with the family and I must respect there wishes by not divulging new information without their permission. I can assure everyone that several family members are reading through this thread but are not interested in contibuting to it as they simply wish to find out more about what happened. If there are any more eye witnesses then it would great if they could put forward there account of what they saw. Information on road conditions, evidence leading up to the crash (i.e. skid marks, road damage etc.), emergency service behaviour and the condition of the vehicle involved are but a few things of high interest to. thanks in advance and well done to those who have posted their eye witness accounts so far as it does help those involved.

Tuesday, February 14, 2012 at 01:58 PMI live opposite where the incident happened and sent my partner out to help after hearing the crash and screams I thought the worst. He went out like a shot to find 2 men, one with what seemed to be minor injuries the other in a terrible way. The car was completely crushed from the passenger side all the way to the drivers seat and the passenger was crushed inside. The emergency services had beenwas being called and they arrived immediately and well equipt. I dont know the man, but really felt for him at the time and still do. I hope he makes a good recovery. I want the family to know that the emergency services done an outstanding job, potentially saveing his life. He was in a critical condition and believe he still is, but if they didnt act fast, he wouldnt of stood a chance. They really pulled all the stops to save this man. Please if anyone hears any news on how hes doing I would really like to know. The driver, I do not feel should be blamed, no-one knows the facts. He must be feeling an imense amount of guilt and be punishing himself far more than anyone else possibly could.
