THE new tunnel at Hindhead, which is due to open southbound today, and northbound on Friday, has been welcomed by a Portsmouth freight business.
MMD uses a fleet of lorries to transport fruit across the UK, and they get stuck at Hindhead every week.
The tunnel is aimed at reducing journey times on the A3 by up to half an hour.
The firm’s director, Mark Willcox, said: ‘The Hindhead Tunnel is going to make a big difference to our business.
‘A reduction in congestion will have a positive impact on delivery times of fresh fruit and vegetables.
‘It will also lessen the amount of fuel we have to use, and reduce the environmental impact of lorries sitting in queuing traffic.’
