A PRESSURE group which aims to conserve the countryside says the government should cut rural speed limits to cut deaths on rural roads.

New speed limits are expected to be published by the government this week and the Campaign to Protect Rural England says it is an opportunity to improve conditions for rural road users and the natural environment.

Rural road deaths account for two-thirds of road deaths – up from half in 2004.

The organisation is calling on the Department for Transport to implement 40mph zones on minor rural roads.
