MOTORISTS escaped injuries after the rear trailer of a car carrier broke free and smashed into the side of a van.

A man was driving the carrier past the roundabout on Western Road, Portsmouth, when he checked his mirrors and realised what happened.

The trailer rolled back down the road before hitting the Lakeside 1000 van, which was parked on a verge near entrance to Lakeside North Harbour business park.

A 1000 Lakeside male employee inside the van at the time was not injured.

The incident happened at about 5.55pm yesterday. The accident happened because the carrier’s drawbar – which connects the front and back end of the vehicle together – broke away.

Police attended and the men’s insurance companies have been notified.

The driver of the car carrier, who did not wish to be named, said: ‘I’m just glad the man in the van wasn’t hurt. It could have been a lot worse.’
