TRAINS were delayed and two youngsters were arrested after a bike was thrown onto a railway line.

Passengers had to endure waits of up to 45 minutes after the South West Trains 7.59pm Portsmouth to Waterloo service struck the cycle which had been hurled from a platform.

Police officers from Portsmouth’s city centre unit were called to Cosham railway station at 8.17pm tonight after CCTV cameras caught three youths committing the crime.

They chased the suspects in cars and on foot while regular updates were posted on social networking website Twitter.

An officer wrote: ‘Three youths have just thrown a bike onto railway lines at Cosham... CCTV following them.

‘Units running and driving to catch these youths.

‘CCTV member is helping with directions to focus police resources.’

Soon two male suspects were in custody and the shocked officer posted: ‘Train has hit the bike!

‘Train has had to stop. No injuries but this will cause delays if you are catching a loco this evening.’

Services between Portchester and Cosham were delayed by between 10 and 45 minutes, and the British Transport Police are investigating the incident.
