CHECK your caravan or trailer before setting out – that is the message from the Highways Agency to avoid accidents this summer.

There were 280 towing-related incidents recorded by the Highways Agency on roads in the south east last year.

Andy Withington, from the Highways Agency, said: ‘We do see a big peak in caravan and towing incidents during the summer, many of which could be avoided if drivers had carried out simple checks.’

The Highways Agency advises anyone towing to: carry out a final maintenance check before setting off, pay attention to the condition and pressure of tyres, check that loads are secure and evenly distributed, use extended mirrors and check you have an appropriate driving licence for towing.
