COMMUTERS who swapped their cars for bicycles for a week cycled the equivalent of twice around the world.

Staff at organisations across Chichester took part in the Workplace Cycle Challenge, clocking up 59,500 miles.

Six hundred people from schools, churches, councils and hospitals swapped four wheels for two and 11 per cent had not ridden a bike in the past year.

Cllr John Connor, from Chichester District Council, said: ‘It’s not every day that you can say “on your bike” and get such a fantastic response. This year’s cycling challenge has motivated many people to cycle to work for the first time. I would like to thank everyone who took part and hope that everyone continues to get on two wheels.

‘You have played your part in cutting vehicle emissions in our beautiful district.’
