EXTRA time will be added to commuters’ journeys while repair work is carried out on a bridge.

Gosport residents are being asked to leave earlier for their journeys as the work takes place on the Haslar Road Bridge over Haslar Lake.

The bridge will be closed for approximately four months from Monday, June 15 and traffic will be diverted.

Some preparation work will start on site from June 8 before the closure.

Pedestrians and dismounted cyclists will still be able to use the bridge.

Recent inspections showed that the bridge’s supporting columns have suffered from extensive cracking, caused by corrosion from the sea water and require major repair work to prevent further damage.

Hampshire County Council’s executive member for economy, transport and environment, Councillor Seán Woodward, said: ‘It’s unfortunate that we have to close this bridge but these are essential reconstruction works that will extend the life of the bridge for many years to come.’
