THE condition of a powerboat racer seriously injured in an accident is said to be slowly improving.

Dan Whapples, from Warsash, was the navigator in a boat which flipped over during a race in the P1 Superstock national powerboat championships off of Weymouth on Sunday.

The 32-year-old was air lifted to Southampton General Hospital and underwent surgery on Monday.

A spokesman for race organisers Powerboat P1 said: ‘Powerboat racer Dan Whapples is showing signs of improvement although he remains in intensive care in Southampton General Hospital. The Royal Yachting Association, the national body of powerboat racing in this country, has confirmed that it will be conducting a full and independent investigation into the incident, and race organiser Powerboat P1 will co-operate fully with the appointed panel.’

Mr Whapples’ colleague, the boat’s driver Mike Lovell, from Southampton, died as a result of injuries he received in the accident.
