POLICE have closed the A3M northbound after a cow ran into the road.
Stunned motorists called the police just after 1pm as the young brown cow wandered onto the busy motorway, at junction four, between Portsmouth and Bedhampton, just after 1pm.
Hannah Lane was travelling back from Guildford when she spotted the bizarre scene.
The 21-year-old, of Leigh Road, Havant, said: ‘I saw all the traffic building up and realised there was a cow - in fact more like a calf - running northbound up the A3M, just past Bedhampton.
‘I rang the police because the traffic was just moving at normal speed down the motorway and the poor thing was running to try and get away from it.
‘The policeman I spoke to was very surprised. Obviously it wasn’t where it was supposed to be. Hopefully it will be caught soon.’
A spokesman for the police said the road was reopened just before 2pm. The cow had been cornered by police but they had to wait for the animal rescue unit and a vet to arrive to take it away before they could open the road.
