SEVEN huge P&O cruise liners will sail past Hill Head, Lee-on-the-Solent and Stokes Bay later today to celebrate the shipping line’s 175 years in business.
It’s hoped there will also be a fly-past from the RAF Red Arrows in The Solent at 7.20pm which will be clearly visible, weather permitting, from the Gosport peninsula.
The Queen’s daughter, Princess Anne, will be in Southampton later to take a royal salute as the seven P&O ships set sail from Southampton Water at around 6pm.
Never before has this number of P&O Cruises ships been in port on the same day.
The liners arrived in Southampton early this morning for a day of events.
But poor weather saw the first Red Arrows fly-past at midday cancelled.
Organisers of the event, which has taken 18 months to put together, are keeping their fingers crossed that the weather will improve so the RAF’s aero-acrobatic team can take to the skies over The Solent for a spectacular 25-minute display at 7.15pm instead.
