A CYCLIST was taken to hospital after being hit by a bus in Portsmouth this afternoon.

The incident took place at the Portsbridge roundabout in Hilsea shortly after 2pm.

The man, believed to be in his 50s, suffered a head injury and was spotted by a passing ambulance which rushed to his aid.

Two lanes of the roundabout were closed while the injured rider was treated by paramedics.

A spokesman for South Central Ambulance Service added that the male’s injury was not thought to be life-threatening.

The official said: ‘One of our ambulances came across the accident at 2.12pm and reported it.

‘In addition, at scene we had a second ambulance along with the air ambulance car.’

The injured cyclist was taken to Queen Alexandra Hospital, Cosham – about a mile away from the scene of the collision.

Nobody on the bus was injured during the incident.

The collision caused traffic to back up from the Portsbridge roundabout, into Hilsea and parts of Cosham.

The road was cleared shortly after 3pm.
