A man has been arrested after a driver fled from the scene of a crash near Chichester Marina.

The A286 Birdham Road was closed off in both directions in Apuldram after two cars collided at 8.10am today.

Damage was minor and nobody was injured, police said.

They said one of the drivers ran off from the scene and following a police search of nearby land a man suspected of being the driver was arrested on suspicion of driving while under the influence of drugs, dangerous driving, and of being a disqualified driver.

He is currently in custody for interview and further enquiries.

The road was open again by 9.50am.

The car he is believed to have been driving had been spotted by police at Bosham around 30 minutes beforehand and officers were searching the area for it at the time of the collision as he is suspected of being a disqualified driver, Sussex Police added.

The road closure caused major disruption to morning commuters south of the A27.
