DRIVERS heading north from Portsmouth this weekend are being warned about road closures on the A3.

Maintenance work to resurface and re-waterproof the bridge which carries the road over the Ascot to Guildford railway line is starting this weekend.

The works will be carried out over two weekends and will mean separate 32-hour closures of the north and southbound carriageways.

Steve Cobb, Highways Agency structures manager, said: ‘It is important we carry out this work to help prolong the life of the structure and help keep journeys safe and reliable for the 80,000 vehicles that use this stretch each day.

‘A 32-hour closure for each carriageway proved to be the safest and most cost effective way to do it while keping disruption to a minimum.’

Weather permitting, the northbound carriageway will be closed between the Compton (B3000) and Stoke (A320) junctions from 9pm on Saturday, June 1 until 5am on Monday June 3.

The southbound carriageway will be closed between the Stoke (A320) and Hog’s Back (A31) junctions from 9pm on Saturday July 20 and 5am on Monday July 22.

Clearly signed diversions will be in place during the closures.
