THE benefits that Portsmouth’s new Northern Road Bridge will bring has been revealed.
Once work on the commuter route in Cosham is finished this spring, there will be one lane for northbound traffic, one for southbound and a new southbound bus and cycle lane.
It’s been designed with three wider lanes and a traffic pinch point north of the bridge, adjacent to Cosham Health Centre, has been removed.
It allows the bus lane to go the length of the bridge and it also means buses no longer have to merge with other traffic. The western footpath has also been widened to create a shared space for cyclists and pedestrians.
Councillor Jason Fazackarley, the council’s cabinet member for traffic and transport, said: ‘The Northern Road bridge project is a great example of the improvements being made across the city.’
