A MAJOR city road is to shut while a far right group conducts a peaceful protest in Portsmouth.

Edinburgh Road will close to traffic from its junction with Anglesea Road and Alfred Road to its junction with Unicorn Road and Stanhope Road while the English Defence League march takes place. The closure will be in place from 10am to 4pm on Saturday.

Meanwhile Portsmouth’s Muslim community is calling for peace. The Jami Mosque, Central Mosque, Muslim Academy and Wessex Jamaat have issued a statement appealing to Muslims to react peacefully to the march. It reads: ‘We seek no confrontation of any sort with members and supporters of the EDL. Individuals who wish to protest are asked to do so in a non-confrontational manner, remembering as we exercise our right to protest, the EDL has a right to a peaceful, non-violent march.’

Last year, the Jami Mosque was targeted by a right-wing protest. Despite the presence of EDL flags at the stand-off, it denies its members were involved.
