MOTORISTS were today counting the cost after a driver lost control and crashed into eight cars.

The 26-year-old driver was driving along Grove Road, in Gosport, in the early hours of Saturday when residents say she hit a speed bump and careered into one car.

That collision then caused her silver Ford Fiesta to ricochet down the road into six more vehicles.

Bangs and crashes followed by screaming woke neighbours, who raced to help pull the distressed woman and her 24-year-old male passenger from her car which ended up on its side.

They were not seriously injured.

The bill to fix all the cars is expected to run into tens of thousands of pounds.

Resident Donna Summers was just about to go outside to wait for a taxi with two guests when the accident happened, at 3.40am.

She said: ‘My daughter’s boyfriend and his friend were outside and I was just about to see them off when I heard a huge bang and saw a car on its side.

‘I immediately ran indoors and called the police.

‘While I was inside the boys got the people out of the car through the windscreen.

‘If there hadn’t been a car in front of where the boys were standing they could have been hit. It was shocking. You don’t expect to see a car on its side at that time of the morning.

‘The driver did say that she hit the speed bumps. We are nine houses down from the speed bumps.’

Another neighbour, who did not want to be named, said: ‘I heard it all happen and I looked out of the window to see all the neighbours were out here, there were flashing lights from the police and paramedics.

‘My friend and I were totally shocked to be honest with you. The way the cars ended up was like a stunt from Top Gear. She probably couldn’t do it again if she tried.’

The driver and passenger were taken to Queen Alexandra Hospital, Cosham, where they were treated for minor injuries.

Among the cars which were hit were an Alfa Romeo, a Mazda Six, a Nissan 350Z and a Vauxhall Corsa which was pushed up on to the pavement.

A spokesman for Hampshire police said: ‘Basically one car lost control and hit several parked cars. There were no serious injuries.

‘Eight cars in all were damaged. No arrests were made, it’s being treated as a genuine accident.’
