A NEW service which lets people travel by sea to the shops has been so successful that an extra boat has been brought in.

Around 600 passengers made the trip on the ‘park and sail’ service from Portsmouth International Port to Gunwharf Quays during its first weekend on July 27/8.

To keep up with demand, a 70-seat boat will sail alongside the existing 100-seater.

Doris Cook, who travelled with her partner from Andover for a day out in Portsmouth, said: ‘We had a wonderful day on Sunday when we used the Park and Sail – from being met at the car park, then on to the bus, then finally the boat trip to Gunwharf Quays.’

Cllr Jason Fazackarley said: ‘The aim is to reduce congestion on the roads, attract more visitors to the area and improve connectivity between the motorway, port and Gunwharf Quays.’
