MOTORISTS took on the new Quay Street roundabout in Fareham this morning after it officially opened last night.

Hampshire County Council and Tesco have worked together to change the layout of the roundabout in preparation for the supermarket giant’s new store opening on Monday.

A new lane has been built through the middle of the roundabout in a bid to ease congestion with motorists trying to get to the new store.

A series of new traffic lights have also been installed.

Throughout rush hour it was busy but it looked simply to be through sheer weight of traffic as motorists headed in and out of Gosport.

Robert Laidler, 73, from Coniston Walk in Fareham, said: ‘It’s been absolutely terrible but today it’s ok. There was no trouble at all. No cars were queueing.

‘But I think it’s going to be utter chaos in the future. The Gosport road is a nightmare as it is.

‘Now with Christmas coming up everybody is going to use Tesco. But everything seems fine this morning.’

The sewer works in Gosport are set to continue until tomorrow.
