FIREFIGHTERS will be out and about telling the public about road safety tomorrow.

As part of the National Road Safety Day organised by the Chief Fire Officers’ Association, a crew from Fareham station will be at Asda on Newgate Lane on Friday from 10am to 4pm.

They will be reinforcing the messages ‘keep your distance’ and ‘watch your speed’.

Figures show that 22,660 people were killed or seriously injured on UK roads last year.

Station manager Clyde Evans said: ‘Many of these incidents could be avoided by raising awareness. Through these messages and campaigns we hope to make lives safer and prevent needless casualties.’

Peter Holland, president of the CFOA, added: ‘Far too often our fire crews are called out to appalling road traffic collisions which are harrowing both for the public involved as well as our firefighters.‘
