FIVE youngsters were arrested by British Transport Police after a bike was thrown on to railway tracks and struck by a train.

The crime was committed near Southampton Road, in Cosham, at around 8.20pm on Monday and caused delays to services in the area.

Officers were called to the line after the bike was hit by the 7.58pm Portsmouth Harbour to Waterloo service – halting trains in the area and causing damage to the rails.

Five youths were arrested on suspicion of endangering safety and one is still in police custody.

Transport Police Inspector Mick Morriss said: ‘I cannot over-emphasise the dangers associated with this type of crime.

‘Thankfully this time, through luck, no-one was injured but we may not be so fortunate if this happens again. This was a mindless act of vandalism that could have had far worse consequences.

‘We are urging anyone who was in or around that area to contact us if they saw anything suspicious.’
