WORKERS trying to find the source of a gas leak beneath a road in Hilsea will reopen part of the carriageway tonight.

Southern Gas Networks discovered a gas leak underneath London Road in the area of the Portsbridge roundabout.

Workers from the gas firm have been digging holes in the ground since last week in an attempt to find the leak.

But the source has not been found underneath two out of the three lanes on the southbound carriageway.

The holes are being refilled and the concrete left to set until 8pm today.

After 8pm, the two lanes will reopen and lane three will be closed while the investigation continues.

A spokeswoman for Portsmouth City Council said if the work extends to the northbound carriageway, all work on the southbound lanes would be finished first.
