EMERGENCY gas leak repair works brought traffic woe to motorists on a busy main road.

Portsmouth City Council said all traffic except buses will be diverted from the southbound carriageway of London Road outside Hilsea Lido while Southern Gas Networks carry out repairs.

A high level of gas is thought to be escaping from the area.

Today southbound traffic was backed up past The News Centre on London Road as works got underway.

The diversion is set to be in place 24 hours a day until July 13.

Motorway traffic is being diverted via Western Road, the M27 and M275.

Meanwhile non-motorway traffic is being diverted via Western Road, Spur Road, Havant Road and Eastern Road.
