The £5m pontoon will stay anchored off the Isle of Wight until it is towed into Portsmouth Harbour late this morning.

Councillor Graham Burgess, chairman of Gosport Borough Council’s community board, said: ‘It’s a welcome sight.

‘People appreciate that the weather was against us last weekend and plans are going ahead. It will be installed this weekend and everyone will be able to use it from Monday.

‘Residents will appreciate the fact we have been able to keep the service running while these major works are taking place.’

The ferry will operate a restricted service at the weekend from Endeavour Quay in Mumby Road.
