HOVERCRAFT services between Southsea and the Isle of Wight will be out of service until at least 8pm because of a technical fault.

A Hovertravel spokesman said the crew noticed a problem with the hovercraft’s equipment about 9.30am and took it out of service.

The firm currently only has one vessel, Island Express, servicing the Southsea to Ryde link because its second hovercraft, Freedom 90, is undergoing an overhaul.

Hovertravel managing director Neil Chapman said passengers were able to use the cross-Solent Wightlink catamaran at no extra cost.

Mr Chapman said: ‘With regard to today’s service cancellation we have put several measures in place to help our customers.

‘We are transferring passengers to the Wightlink catamaran service at our cost, with Hovertravel staff at the Ryde Pier entrance and Pier head to offer assistance and facilitate Hovertravel passengers.

‘There will be a Hoverbus concierge travelling on the Hoverbus for the duration of our cancellation to assist our customers.’
