The problem between Guildford and Haslemere led to some services being diverted across to Eastleigh in order to continue to Portsmouth.

South West Trains said problems were expected to last until 11am.

A spokesman said: ‘Inspection teams have found a defect with a rail on the line between Guildford and Haslemere. At the moment trains are unable to run between Guildford and Haslemere in the Portsmouth direction. Trains towards London from Portsmouth are unaffected at this time.

Services may be diverted via Eastleigh, and we are working to source replacement transport as quickly as possible.

‘We’re sorry for the disruption to your journey this morning.’

And there were further problems because of a points issue at Wimbledon.
