MOTORISTS are urged to avoid part of a busy road in Portsmouth on Sunday while roadworks are carried out.

Drivers will not be able to use London Road in North End, from Derby Road to Chichester Road between 8am and 5.30pm.

Southbound traffic will be diverted via Derby Road, Stamshaw Road and Kingston Crescent.

Northbound traffic will divert via Chichester Road, Copnor Road and Stubbington Avenue.

But there will still be access for pedestrians as city council contractor Colas carry out works in preparation for new crossing points.

Colas supervisor Marcus Mullaney said: ‘This site is a difficult site to balance whilst we try to carry out the works safely and minimising disruptions to surrounding residents and businesses.

‘We have had to close this part of London Road to carry out the works so that we do not prolong disruptions. We’d like to thank people for their kind patience and understanding during this work.’

Footway widening work and changes to pedestrian crossings are part of the council’s project to make London Road ‘a safer and a more pleasant shopping area’.
